Torp it like Latho

Don't be surprised if the two Xstrata Queensland Schools fullbacks Simon Morahan and Elih Baillie start "torping like Latho" at next week's national championships in Canberra.

QR Reds and Wallaby fullback Chris Latham dropped in to Schools training at Ballymore for a half hour "one on two" session with No 1 team fullback Morahan and Baillie (No 2), who are both Reds scholarship holders.

The half hour session turned into an hour and the one-on-two into one-on-many, as other members of the squad were drawn to the session like bees to honey.

"We had to tell the props and locks to clear off, it was getting so crowded," quipped ARU Elite Player Development Coach, Chris Lane.

Latham stressed to the players the importance of practice, good technique and repetition of the key components of a good torpedo kick.

The most common fault shown by players at the session was trying to kick the cover off the ball in the pursuit of greater distance, at the expense of technique.

However by the end of the session it was clear that some of the tips had been absorbed and that the Reds fullbacks of the future had something to work on when they go off to practice, practice, practice.
