QR Queensland Reds centre Ben Tune enjoyed a dream farewell to Suncorp stadium with a 70m intercept try that helped end the Reds' nine match losing streak with a courageous 23-13 win over the Cheetahs in the Investec Super 14.

Tune is due to retire at the end of the season in two games' time but punched the air like an excited teenager scoring his first Super 14 try when he realised no-one was going to catch him as he headed for the line.

"I tell you what, when I caught the ball I thought there was no way that I was going to make the tryline because they have two guys on the wing with some serious gas and it was only a matter of time before I was run down," Tune told a media conference after the game.

"I even had a look up at the big screen to see no one was catching up on me.

"That's why when I scored I was so elated.

"It was a long way and people have asked me why I didn't do the dive," a reference to his trademark swan dive of a few years ago.

"I wouldn't have got up if I did the dive. It felt like 300m. It just reinforced the fact that I've got to stop playing this game."

The try gave the Reds a 14-3 halftime lead after lock James Horwill's earlier five pointer, his first Super 14 try, came from deft handling and a preparedness by the Reds to have a dig in front of the loyal crowd of 12,500.

Clinton Schifcofske added the extras with two conversions and three penalties.

QR Queensland Reds 23 (James Horwill, Ben Tune tries; Clinton Schifcofske 2 cons, 3 pens) bt The Cheetahs 13 (Kabamba Floors try; Meyer Bosman con, 2 pens). Crowd: 12,500.
