Sunshine Coast v Gold Coast Breakers

Stockland Park
2:00pm - 5/7/2009
Gold Coast
21 Round 14 27

A controversial try to the Gold Coast Breakers rubbed salt into the wound of losing a player to a yellow card as the Sunshine Coast Stingrays slumped to another narrow loss, 27-21, in Queensland Premier Rugby.

The Stingrays were trailing 11-15 in the second half when they lost flanker Isaac Helu to the sin-bin. The Breakers took immediate advantage, with flyhalf Vitori Toma-Buatava crossing for a decisive try despite the home side's complaints that it came from a knock-on.

A fourth Breakers try soon after by Tyler Edwards further stretched the visitors' lead ,but to their credit the Stingrays regathered their composure to come back and claim a bonus point for finishing within seven points.

Stingrays assistant coach Brett Johnstone said the sin binning of Helu cost the team dearly although he was proud of the way they fought back.

“Although the decision to bin Helu was damaging, the boys did start the game strong and did fight back, though full credit to Gold Coast for coming out on top,” Johnstone said.

“During the season we have only had two major losses, the others have been only by six to seven points. So to our credit, being a young team the boys are constantly improving and developing into a competitive side.”

Gold Coast Breakers 27 (T Edwards, J Fuimaono, C Bracewell, V Buatava tries, Buatava 2 con, pen) bt Sunshine Coast Stingrays 21 (A Dear, T Bransdon, J Macpherson tries; J Rodley 2 pens)
