St.George Queensland Reds winger Rod Davies continued to be one of the Reds best attacking threats during an injury-hit 2012 campaign which netted a further 10 Super Rugby caps, bringing his career provincial tally to 35.
When healthy, Rod proved equally impressive in stints at fullback and on the wing and will be confident of returning to a full bill of health in 2013 after recently re-committing to Queensland Rugby through until the end of 2014.
A hamstring injury initially limited his start to the Reds’ Australian Conference-winning campaign, but he soon found his way back into the side by round two against the Western Force. The confidence of Davies continued to grow throughout 10 consecutive performances before injury again struck down the 23-year-old speedster, knee surgery in May forcing a premature end to 2012.
Only a year earlier the Rockhampton-born flyer exploded during a breakthrough year where he featured heavily in the Reds Super Rugby title-winning feat before going on to earn his Wallabies debut against Samoa on the wing.
Rod’s selection in the Wallabies initial 40-man squad was ample reward for the enormous strides made during his third season of professional rugby, where he scored five tries in 12 games for the Reds including a hat trick against the Blues in the semi-final. That three-try effort made the squad’s fastest man the first Reds representative in the professional rugby era to score a hat-trick in one match.
Hamstring problems limited Rod to just eight matches in 2010 although, when on the paddock, he provided a real x-factor, scoring an equal team high five tries.
Rod made the decision to return to the 15-a-side code in 2009 following two seasons playing rugby league with the Brisbane Broncos. The Broncos snared the signature of the man they call “Rocket” straight out of school after he played fullback in the same Australian Schoolboys backline that included the likes of Quade Cooper in 2006.
An Ipswich Grammar School product, Rod was formerly a member of the ARU’s National Talent Squad. He was also the Greater Public Schools (GPS) 100m Sprint Champion in his final year of school - his pace proving a real asset under the Reds expansive approach to the game.
Rod’s first taste with the Reds came on their Development Tour of Ireland and France at the end of 2008, ahead of his first Super 14 season in 2009, where he provided useful service in his five appearances before earning himself a spot in the Australian Under 20 side at the IRB U20 World Championships.
DID YOU KNOW?
Rod was just as big a star off the field as he was on it during 2012 with the Reds flyer catching the attention of females across the country after making CLEO magazine’s 50 Most Eligible Bachelors list, joining fellow rugby union star James O’Connor.
