The experience of veteran lock Adam Wallace Harrison proved a huge asset to the St.George Queensland Reds in 2012 with coach Ewen McKenzie nominating the talented lineout general as the team’s vice-captain following a season ending injury to James Horwill.
Adam’s knowledge of the game and steadfast nature made him the perfect candidate for the vice-captaincy role during Horwill’s absence with McKenzie hailing his work ethic and dogged dependability for reasons behind his promotion.
The injury to Horwill also elevated Adam from one of the best late game closers in the game to the starting line-up for the team’s remaining four matches, including the Reds’ qualifying final against the Sharks at Suncorp Stadium.
Adam featured nine times for the Reds in 2012 with his return from a knee injury sustained during the preseason keeping him out of action until round 10 against the Blues in Auckland – and finished the season with 62 Super Rugby caps to his name.
In 2012, Adam also spent his role as assistant coach to Queensland Premier Rugby heavyweights Sunnybank, who fell agonisingly short of back-to-back Hospital Cups after losing to University in the grand final at Ballymore.
Only a year earlier, and in a star-studded line-up that featured numerous Reds, Adam was the standout for Sunnybank in their Premier Rugby final victory over Brothers and was awarded the Tony Shaw Medal for Best on Ground.
2011 was a watershed year for the towering Reds lock, and along with winning the Super Rugby and Queensland Premier Rugby competitions, he made his 50th Super Rugby appearance. The honour came in the second last round of the regular season against the Western Force.
After returning to Queensland in 2010, the Perth-born talent has continued to improve in his role during the three-year tenure and has showed there is plenty left in the tank to contribute in the 2013 season, announcing in January that he had re-signed until the end of 2014.
Adam made his debut for the Reds in 2003 only to have it cut short by a serious knee injury suffered just seconds into his first capped match against the Crusaders at Ballymore.
With the injury limiting his opportunities in 2004, he made the move to the Brumbies for 2005, where he became a Wallabies tourist without winning a Test cap. Adam also won Australia A recognition in 2005 and 2007.
Adam remained with the Brumbies, where he played at lock and blindside flanker, until heading to Japan following the 2008 Super Rugby season.
DID YOU KNOW?
Along with Beau Robinson, Adam produced one of the toughest individual efforts during the 2012 Super Rugby season. Chronic injuries meant Adam was unable to complete a full week of training from early May but he battled on to the benefit of the team and was influential in their six-game winning streak to end the regular season.
