Rob Simmons was a standout performer for the St.George Queensland Reds in 2012, appearing in every game of the season for the second year running to finish the season just two matches shy of his 50th Queensland and Super Rugby cap.
After also featuring in every match during 2011, Rob backed his efforts up to be one of the team’s leading performers as he elevated his game further once captain and fellow second-rower James Horwill succumb to a season-ending hamstring injury.
Rob proved his toughness equalled his dedication, taking the field in the must-win final round of the season after suffering a concerning deep cork in his left thigh during the previous week’s encounter against the Highlanders.
A consistent performer for both the Reds and the Wallabies, Rob earned 16 Test Caps during the 2010 and 2011 Test seasons and featured in six of the seven games during the 2011 World Cup.
After being overlooked by the Wallabies for the start of the Rugby Championships in 2012, Rob took his expertise to the Queensland Premier Rugby competition, where he played a crucial role in Sunnybank’s runner-up finish, before returning to the Wallabies squad for their tour of South Africa and Argentina.
With superlative size, speed, and ball-handling, Rob made his breakthrough year in 2010, earning his first starting appearance for the Reds—after debuting off the bench against the Bulls in 2009—before rapidly earning a Test debut in front of a home crowd against the Springboks at Suncorp Stadium later that year.
After cementing his green and gold jersey, Rob was part of the squad that defeated the All Blacks in Brisbane to claim Australia’s first Tri Nations title in 10 years.
A product of The Southport School, Rob had been part of the elite development pathway since representing Queensland and Australian Schoolboys in 2006, before earning membership in the QAS Reds Academy in 2007.
Rob was rewarded with a Reds contract after impressing in the Australian U19s before finishing the 2007 season with the MFS East Coast Aces in the inaugural Australian Rugby Championship. In 2008, Rob was a member of the Australian Under 20s side at the Junior World Championships in Wales.
Rob hails from Theodore, a small country town in central Queensland with a population of just 450.
