St.George Queensland Reds flanker Eddie Quirk enjoyed his best year of Super Rugby during a 2012 season where he matured as a player to become a regular performer within the matchday squad before a shoulder reconstruction ended a promising individual campaign.
All seven caps Eddie earned during 2012 came off the bench although his impact was heavily felt on the field with his high work rate and accuracy at the breakdown giving the Reds a decisive edge in the second half of matches. His 191cm and 108kg frame was also utilised to maximum effect with his ball carrying a highlight of his season.
However, just as the young red-head was producing career-best form, a shoulder injury in the Reds exhibition game against the Hurricanes on the Sunshine Coast cruelly put an end to his campaign. With flanker Scott Higginbotham making the move south to Melbourne, Eddie is expected to be a huge contributor in 2013.
It won’t be the first time Eddie has been forced to step up. He began season 2011 with the huge task of filling the shoes of departed openside flanker Daniel Braid, in just his first year in the senior Reds squad.
Quirk ran on in the No.7 jersey for the opening two matches of the season against the Western Force and NSW Waratahs, taking on Wallabies supremo David Pocock in his starting debut before locking horns with Waratahs skipper Phil Waugh the following week in Sydney.
The powerful red head brings a hard edge to the forward pack and also valuable versatility with the ability to slot in comfortably at No.6 or No.8.
A dual U20s representative in 2010 and 2011, Eddie’s hard running style has also seen him enjoy plenty of success in the shortened version of the game with the Australian Sevens team, where in 2010 he racked up six tries in a standout campaign.
He has also represented Queensland and Australia as a Schoolboy and was the recipient of the Bronze Boot Award for a Man of the Match performance against New Zealand in 2008.
On his way to the Reds, Eddie compiled an impressive representative resume, which included Queensland Under 16s (2007); Queensland Schoolboys (2008); Australia A (2008), Australian Schoolboys (2008); QAS Reds Academy (2009-10); Australian Sevens (2009-10) and Australian U20s (2010-2011).

Eddie is viewed as a leader of the future within the Reds setup and was chosen as captain of Queensland A during the 2012 Pacific Rugby Cup campaign, where they faced matches against Fiji Warriors, Samoa A and Tonga A.
