Ulupano ‘UJ’ Seuteni remains the youngest member of the St.George Queensland Reds Extended Playing Squad despite 2013 being his second year within Queensland Rugby’s development setup.
Such was the talent of UJ that he was contracted to the 2012 EPS at just 17 years-of-age and while still in his final year of schooling at The Southport School.
When signed, he was the second schoolboy to be chosen within the Reds system for 2012, following the earlier signing of Brisbane State High School talent Chris Feauai-Sautia into the main squad.
UJ spent the majority of his inaugural year with the Reds learning the ropes and gaining valuable experience and will be better equipped heading into a 2013 campaign where he won’t hit 20 until early December.
In his inaugural year with the Reds, UJ was chosen in the Australian Under 20 side to compete at the Junior World Cup, where he featured predominantly in the number 15 jersey.
He also played an integral role to Easts in the Queensland Premier Rugby competition where he flashed his playmaking potential and talents in a season where the Tigers also marginally missed the Finals Series. However, by end of year, UJ had become one of the most damaging players in the competition with his kicking game a huge asset to the side.
Born and raised in Adelaide, UJ spent the majority of 2011 injured after breaking his fibula and dislocating his ankle in a preseason school trial. The injury hindered his final year of Rugby at TSS and also resulted in him missing the Australian Sevens team at the Youth Commonwealth Games. Despite the disappointment, UJ still managed to impress coach Ewen McKenzie enough to gain his place in the 2012 EPS.
A highly regarded and freakish schoolboy talent, UJ has represented South Australia from an under 12-18 level and he was also part of an Australian Schools Presidents XV team against Samoa.
