Blake Enever joins the St.George Queensland Reds Extended Playing Squad for 2013 after impressing coach Ewen McKenzie with each opportunity he received last season as a member of the Australian Rugby Union’s National Academy.
A former QAS Reds Academy member in 2011, Blake made his Super Rugby debut in 2012 as a 20-year-old when he was used off the bench in Queensland’s 32-17 victory over the Melbourne Rebels in round 16 in June.
Blake was initially chosen as the team’s 23rd man for the encounter but was a matchday call up after Wallaby flyer Digby Ioane was ruled out of the encounter through illness.
The towering lock got a small taste of Super Rugby with a short five-minute cameo although his attitude and ability impressed coaches who again selected Blake as the team’s 23rd man for the remainder of the regular season, against the Highlanders and NSW Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium.
His opportunity with the Reds in 2012 weren’t limited to his Super Rugby debut with the former Sunshine Coast product starring in a Queensland side who played the Hurricanes in a June Exhibition match.
Following the game coach Ewen McKenzie hailed the 199cm, 116kg talent for his Rugby intelligence while Blake described the opportunity as a dream come true.
Blake didn’t follow the traditional Rugby pathway on his way to the QAS Reds Academy as he was first noticed not at school, but as part of the Sunshine Coast Stingrays colts’ team.
His selection in the ARU’s Academy or 2012 saw a move from the Stingrays to Easts for the Queensland Premier Rugby competition, where the Tigers fell just short of the Finals Series.
Blake was chosen in the Australian Under 20s side to contest the Youth World Cup in Italy in 2011 while he played a significant role in Sunshine Coast Grammar’s premiership winning 1st XV team in 2007 and went on to win the Sunshine Coast Grammar School Rugby Player of the Year award in 2008 as well as selected being selected as Player of the Japan Tour later that year.
