Jarrad Butler has been signed to the St.George Queensland Reds Extended Playing Squad for 2013 after making his Super Rugby debut in 2012 after being plucked out of the National Academy by Director of Coaching Ewen McKenzie.
Jarrad has followed the elite development pathway in his journey to the EPS and was a former QAS Reds Academy squad member in 2010 and 2011 before being selected by the Australian Rugby Union as a Brisbane-based member of their inaugural Academy in 2012.
However, Jarrad impressed McKenzie enough in 2012 to be called into the Reds group for their late season campaign and made his debut in round 17 against the Highlanders at Suncorp Stadium, a match won by Queensland 19-13.
His debut came in Queensland Rugby’s inaugural Indigenous Round clash although Jarrad, who is of Maori heritage, was also one of four New Zealand-born players selected in the matchday 22, joining winger Chris F’Sautia, flyhalf Quade Cooper and centre Mike Harris.
Jarrad gained selection off the bench for that encounter after Liam Gill was sidelined with a hamstring injury while Beau Robinson commenced the match in the number seven jersey.
Jarrad was identified at school as a player to watch and boasts an impressive Rugby resume that includes The Southport School 1st XV 2007-09; Queensland and Australian Schoolboys 2008; and the QAS Reds Academy and Reds 2nd XV 2010-11.
A former Gold Coast Breakers talent, Jarrad made the move to Easts in 2012 where he was a prominent member of their Queensland Premier Rugby squad which only marginally fell short of qualifying for the Finals Series in 2012.
He also has the ability to excel in Sevens Rugby while in the 15-man game he has the ability to play in any backrow positions, although his preference remains at either blindside flanker or number eight.
DID YOU KNOW?
Jarrad made such an impression in his debut Super Rugby season that he selected on the bench in the Reds’ round 18 do-or-die encounter against the New South Wales Waratahs and again in their Qualifying Final against the Sharks, where he was an unused replacement.
