Southern Bay Rugby Club and St.George Bank Work Together Through Innovative Program

Southern Bay Rugby Club and St.George Bank are working together through an innovative program to produce real benefits for grassroots Rugby Union and the local community.

The Southern Rugby Club will be presented with a cheque of $1,200 by St.George Bank Victoria Point this Thursday as part of the St.George Rugby Referral Program.  The much-needed injection of funds will provide the local bayside club with equipment for upcoming seasons.

Southern Bay Rugby Union President Ian Smit said “It is great to be able to work together with our local St.George Bank branch to bring funding into our small club.  This commission payment will help pay for equipment for next season,” Mr Smit said.

The Rugby Referral program is a joint initiative between Queensland Rugby and their Principal Naming Rights Sponsor St.George Bank, which provides the Rugby community in Queensland with the opportunity to give back to their local Rugby club when they take out a home or business loan at any Queensland branch.

Customers simply nominate the rugby club they wish to donate funds to and St.George makes a commission payment of 0.25% to the club on settlement of the loan.

Southern Bay is reaping the rewards from the Rugby Referral Program, which is now offering over 90 Queensland Rugby clubs the chance to improve their financial sustainability.

So far through the program over $21,000 has been raised for grassroots rugby clubs, providing a handy boost to clubs while assisting players, parents and volunteers dedicated to the code.

Queensland Rugby General Manager of Game Development David Hanham has encouraged further community clubs to take up the opportunities offered by the Rugby Referral program.

“The clubs already involved in the Rugby Referral program are receiving significant benefits as a result of their association and we encourage all clubs to take up this opportunity to strengthen their financial sustainability,” Mr Hanham said.

“More than 90 of our community clubs have taken the opportunity to grow the ‘Rugby Economy’ by signing up to the program and the contribution made by St.George Bank to Southern Bay Rugby Club is just one example of the benefits.
