The Queensland Reds making the qualifying finals of the Super Rugby has put the planned Riverside Expressway closure on hold this weekend.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson said the decision was made to delay the works so the closure wouldn't cause traffic delays for thousands of rugby fans on Saturday night.
"I made the decision to re-schedule works, after the Reds defeated the Waratahs last Saturday and earned a home qualifier at Suncorp," Mr Emerson said.
"While we encourage everyone to take public transport to the Reds game this Saturday, the reality is there will be thousands of more vehicles on the road.
"These maintenance works are important, but putting them back one week won't cause issues for our schedule, so we made the best decision for everyone."
The works are now planned to take place the following weekend with the expressway southbound closed from 9pm, Friday, 27 July, to 5am, Monday, 30 July. There are no major events planned for either Suncorp Stadium or the Gabba at this time.
During the closure, traffic will be diverted off at Elizabeth Street, along William Street and returning to the motorway at Alice Street.
The works are required to replace old pot bearings located under the expressway deck with new 60kg stainless steel pot bearings. A pot bearing supports the weight of the bridge deck and allows movement in response to changing temperatures and different loads.
