The Redlands Mudcrabs U15s are off to Argentina.
The side, who play in the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union competition, have been raising funds since November 2018 to make ‘the trip of a lifetime’ possible.
Over $116,000 is required for the boys to head to South America in September, where they will play four matches against local teams.
The tour will begin in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aries, with a match against Hindu Rugby Club, a premier club who has won provincial and national competitions in their rich 84-year history.
The Muddies will then head to the coastal town of Mar del Plata before travelling north to Rosaria for their third clash of the tour.
Their fourth and final match will be against the Hindu Club once again in Buenos Aries.
The boys will start their Argentinian experience in June this year when they meet with the Jaguares ahead of their Round 16 clash with the St.George Queensland Reds at Suncorp Stadium.
Coach and key member of the organising committee Brendon Winslow said the trip is about more than just Rugby.
“We are doing it for the kids,” Winslow said of himself and the fundraising team.
“A lot of them haven’t left Australia before so it will be a great experience for them both culturally and for their Rugby.
“We are hoping to develop relationships which won’t die once the boys leave and hopefully have boys travel over there in the future or have the Hindu club come to tour Australia.”
The once in a lifetime trip won’t come easy however, with much fundraising to be done before the team can jet off in late September.
“It’s a massive ask to make it happen,” Winslow said.
“We’ve made a commitment to the boys and we’ve been working like slaves, as have the boys.”
Fundraising efforts have been immense so far, with the side hosting raffles, car washes, trivia nights, sausage sizzles and even volunteering at the Tamborine Mountain marathon water station to raise money.
Dilan Winslow has taken the fundraising a step further, with the young hooker out to collect 45,000 recyclable bottles and cans to pay for his tour via the Containers for Change initiative.
While the team fundraising efforts continue to thrive, the Muddies are now looking for sponsors for the team’s touring kit and trip.
A variety of sponsorship options are available through the Muddies2Argentina website (http://bit.ly/2DEYYo9), with sponsors ensured of brand promotion on the web, social media and on the sides touring kit.
Donations can also be made to the team’s Facebook page, while eligible recyclable cans and bottles can also be donated to the Muddies tour fund, using the ID C10003404 at Containers for Change drop off locations.
It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for this group of young players, and with the help of the Rugby community, it can come to fruition.
