Queensland Rugby clubs and schools to form giant ‘Q’ at Ballymore

The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) is calling on all Rugby playing clubs and schools in the State to pull on their playing kits and join the ‘Q Formation’ in January 2019.

The ‘Q Formation’ will unite over 200 of Queensland’s Rugby clubs and schools in an enormous Q on Ballymore’s main field, with the event to be aerially photographed on Wednesday January 23 next year.

Illustrating the many clubs and colours of our vast Rugby community, the ‘Q Formation’ will become a symbol of the strength and diversity of one of World Rugby’s oldest and most prolific Unions.

QRU Chairman Jeff Miller said that the event is a chance to showcase the strength and success of Rugby in Queensland at the spiritual home of Rugby in Queensland – Ballymore.

“The ‘Q Formation’ will unite the members of the QRU as one and will create an image that we can to display with pride to the Queensland Rugby community.

“The QRU is more than just our professional teams and I encourage all clubs and schools to take part in the event, whether it be coming to Ballymore on the day or sending their kit to be worn in the photograph,” said Miller.

Australian Olympian Cate Campbell has thrown her support behind the event, with the gold medallist volunteering her time to bring the ‘Q Formation’ to fruition.

“Sport is such a powerful tool to unite and empower people,” Campbell said.

“We’re encouraging the Queensland Rugby family to come together to show off their various colours and it will be a special sight to see the clubs and schools within the Rugby community in their kit at Ballymore for the photo.”

St.George Queensland Reds players and representatives from Queensland’s other elite teams will also form part of the ‘Q Formation’ in their playing kit.

Over 200 of Queensland Rugby’s affiliates have been contacted by email or phone to either attend the event or donate their kit to be displayed at Ballymore in the future.

2018 Hospital Cup Premiers and largest junior Rugby club in the Southern Hemisphere, GPS, has already backed the ‘Q Formation’ and provided their kit for the event.

GPS General Manager and former Wallaby Anthony Herbert is encouraging the hundreds of clubs throughout Queensland to get involved.

“There’s a long, rich history with clubs and the QRU and the Q Formation gives the chance for all affiliates to come together as one.

“It’s going to show just how big Rugby in Queensland is and will be a real eye-opener with teams and jerseys coming together from far and wide.

“It’s a chance to make an image that we can all be really proud of and can represent us as a Rugby community,” Herbert added.

It is the QRU’s intention to display all the jerseys worn in the ‘Q Formation’ in the new building of a redeveloped Ballymore in years to come.

Those clubs and schools who are interested in the event but have not yet received full details are advised to contact conor.feehely@redsrugby.com.au or cate.campbell@redsrugby.com.au.
