Queensland Rugby Union's (QRU) official Brisbane FM radio partner, Triple M, has secured the naming Rights to 'Triple M's Hospital Challenge Cup Match of the Round', for the remainder of 2018 season.
In another boost to grass-roots Rugby in Queensland, the broadcaster - which has enjoyed a near three-decade commercial relationship with the QRU - will promote each 'Match of the Round' across its platforms and carry editorial interviews before and after each blockbuster.
The announcement comes just one month the QRU and national TV broadcaster FOX SPORTS agreed to replay the Queensland Premier Rugby 2018 Hospital Challenge Cup 'Match of the Round' each Wednesday evening.
Damon Rielly, Executive General Manager of Southern Cross Austereo Queensland (which includes the Triple M network) said: "Triple M is a big supporter of Rugby Union in Australia at all levels. We are the longest standing corporate partner with the Queensland Rugby Union spanning almost 30 years, we support the Wallabies whenever they come to Brisbane and we are also the Major Sponsor of Norths Rugby Union Club.
"I'm very proud that Triple M will be the major sponsor of the now Foxtel televised, Triple M Match of the Round. Club rugby is flourishing - and we want to help further the growth at a grass-roots level."
The QRU's Interim CEO David Hanham said: "We're delighted with this agreement with Triple M, which will enable the Queensland Premier Rugby competition to continue to extend its reach into the local market and engage new fans and existing Rugby supporters. We're excited that the traditional grass-roots rivalries in Queensland Club Rugby are reaching the widest possible audience."
The first 'Triple M's Hospital Challenge Cup Match of the Round' will be held this Saturday afternoon at Chipsy Wood Oval when Quade Cooper's Souths take on GPS in a crucial Round 16 contest, as the finals series draws near.
The QRU's promotion of Queensland Premier Rugby's Hospital Challenge Cup will now include:
The original Hospital Football Challenge in 1899 was a fund-raising venture for the Brisbane Hospital. Its trophy, the magnificent Hospital Challenge Cup, remains the most desirable silverware in Queensland Club Rugby.
Since reconstitution as the Queensland Premier Rugby Competition after World War II, the Cup has been claimed a competition-leading 22-times by University of Queensland FC, followed closely by historic rivals Brothers Rugby Club, on 21.
