Bond University Queensland Country side named for clash against NSW Country at Bond University

Bond University Queensland Country head coach Brad Thorn has made two changes to his starting XV ahead of their clash against the NSW Country Eagles at Bond University this Saturday, 7 October, in Round 6 of the National Rugby Championship.

Having returned from the Wallabies tour to South Africa earlier this week, Izaia Perese will line up in the starting backline at outside centre, having featured on the wing in Country’s two opening fixtures. He’ll start in place of Chris Feauai-Sautia, who will miss the match through injury.

The second change will see Alex Mafi return to the starting side at hooker.

A further three changes have been made to the reserves, with Gold Coast local Byron Hutchinson and Australian and Queensland U20s hooker Efi Ma’afu both selected for their potential Queensland Country debuts.

Hutchinson, who is capped in the NRC for Perth Spirit, grew up on the Gold Coast playing junior Rugby for the Gold Coast Eagles and his school AB Patterson College. Ma’afu has worked under Thorn for the past two seasons, forming part of the 2016 and 2017 undefeated Queensland U20s campaigns.

St.George Queensland Reds prop Kirwan Sanday has also been recalled into the match-day 23, providing cover at tighthead prop in the reserves.

“This Saturday we’ve got a tough challenge ahead of us. NSW Country are a solid side and have a good defensive record so far this season,” said Thorn.

“The Country v Country rivalry is also an intense one, we’ve seen previous Queensland Country sides embrace that ‘Battle of the Bush’ mentality and we’ll be looking to do the same.

“It’s a bonus to have Perese back from the Wallabies this week, but it’s also exciting to have two players on the bench in line for their Queensland Country debuts. They’ve been working hard at training and it’s testament to the depth we have this year.”

Round 6 of the NRC also marks Pasifika Round, and with 18 players of Polynesian heritage in the Country squad, it will be a meaningful day for the team.

“We’ve got a large contingent of Polynesians within the team who are all proud of their heritage, and who will be proud to represent their families and wider communities on Saturday,” said Thorn.

As part of the Pasifika Round celebrations, fans are encouraged to bring their old Rugby boots and kit to the game on Saturday, with items collected being donated to Fijian communities as part of ‘The Fiji Project’. There will be a collection bin located at the Bond University Rugby Club house.

The match between Queensland Country and NSW Country will kick off at 4:00pm AEST. Fans can tune into the live stream of the match via www.foxsports.com.au
