St.George Queensland Reds centre Samu Kerevi signs two-year contract extension

St.George Queensland Reds centre Samu Kerevi has signed a two-year contract with Queensland Rugby Union, which will see him remain at Ballymore until 2018.

Kerevi has been in rampant form for the Reds this season and is one of the most potent attacking threats in Super Rugby. Remarkably, he is still rated in the Top 5 players across the competition for carries (120) and defenders beaten (35), despite missing the last two matches with a broken hand.

The 22-year-old was born in Fiji, but moved to Brisbane at the age of seven. He flourished as a young Rugby player alongside Reds teammates Curtis Browning and Chris Feauai-Sautia at Brisbane State High School, highlighted by his selection in the Queensland Schoolboys in 2011.

He was plucked from Queensland Premier Rugby to join the Reds squad ahead of the 2014 season and has been a handful for opposition defenders ever since making his Super Rugby against the Highlanders later that year. He was also a cornerstone of Brisbane City’s back-to-back championship-winning seasons in the National Rugby Championship in 2014-2015.

Kerevi has also become a fan favourite for his actions off the field, which include his passionate support of his home nation of Fiji when it was suffered widespread devastation as a result of Cyclone Winston.

Kerevi said he has loved his time at Ballymore so far and hoped to form part of a new generation of Queensland Reds determined to return the side to success.

“I want to build something here at the Reds and I believe in this young group and the coaching staff we have. I believe we can grow into the team we want to be,” he said.

“I’m really enjoying my time at Ballymore. It’s been a tough season, but we’ve showed glimpses of what we’re capable of and we’re only going to get better.

“I grew up watching Queensland and wanting to play for them, so I feel blessed to have that opportunity and I’m excited to be here for another two years.”

Queensland Rugby Union Executive General Manager – Reds, Daniel Herbert, said:
“Samu has made a home for himself at Ballymore. He’s one of the young leaders within our squad and is highly respected.

“Through his hard work and dedication, he has established himself as one of the great ball-carrying centres in Super Rugby. He has a genuine desire to continue to learn and get better and we believe he has plenty of development left in him. We look forward to seeing what he can achieve here in Queensland.”
