Reds sign Ben Matwijow as injury cover for Kane Douglas

The St.George Queensland Reds have secured ITM Cup-winning Canterbury lock Ben Matwijow for the 2016 Super Rugby season.

Matwijow joins the Reds as cover for Wallabies lock Kane Douglas, who suffered a knee injury in the Rugby World Cup final in London last month. The Reds lock stocks also include Wallabies World Cup starter Rob Simmons and former Rebels player Cadeyrn Neville, who won the National Rugby Championship with Brisbane City earlier this year.

The 25-year-old stands at 197cm and weighs 117kg and Reds forwards coach Nick Stiles said he was a solid addition to the squad.

“Ben’s character and work ethic are exceptional,” Stiles said.

“His recent time in the ITM Cup is excellent preparation for Super Rugby. He’s an experienced player who comes to us hungry to play Super Rugby.

“We’re fortunate at the Reds to have some promising young locks like Izack Rodda and Lukhan Tui training with us at the moment, but it’s great to be able to add another experienced head to the group as we prepare for Super Rugby.”

Matwijow has previous training experience with the Melbourne Rebels (2012) and Western Force (2013), featuring in their match against the touring British & Irish Lions.

The lock also played for NSW Country Eagles in the 2014 National Rugby Championship. He joined Canterbury ahead of the 2015 season in order to further develop his game.

Matwijow said he had learnt a lot from his time playing in New Zealand this year and felt he could contribute to the Reds.

“I’m absolutely stoked to be joining the Reds,” he said.

“It’s all about doing the hard work and things will fall into place if you do the work. I’ve dealt with Nick Stiles before at the Force and he’s a great coach, he knows how to get the best out of me.

“Playing in New Zealand was an awesome experience and I learnt a lot about my game. Canterbury’s expectation is to win. They’re the team everyone wants to beat and they’ve got a really ruthless mentality.”

Matwijow will join the Reds at Ballymore Stadium next week to commence pre-season training, in preparation for the 2016 Super Rugby season.
