Reds back to Ballymore for second trial match of 2014

The St.George Queensland Reds will return to Ballymore in 2014 to face Australian rivals Melbourne Rebels in a Asteron Life Super Rugby trial match in February.

Tickets go on sale today for the Reds’ clash against the Rebels, which takes place Friday, February 14.

Reds head coach Richard Graham said the fixture would provide key match experience for his team only a week out from the Asteron Life Super Rugby regular season.

“The match against the Rebels will be another key component of our preparation,” Graham said.

“It will follow on from what should be a high-quality game against the Chiefs, in Toowoomba, and will be our last hit out before the Asteron Life Super Rugby season kicks off.

“It’s exciting to be able to see elite Rugby at Ballymore, the spiritual home of our game in Queensland.

“We have limited opportunities to see games of a Asteron Life Super Rugby standard at Ballymore.

“Some of the great moments of our game have taken place at this ground, so it’s always special to play here.”

In its 48-year history, Ballymore Stadium has hosted countless iconic Rugby encounters.

Provincially, Ballymore has featured many historic Queensland matches, including wins over the British & Irish in 1971 and All Blacks in 1980.

Internationally, Ballymore has played host to Rugby World Cup pool games in 1987, a British & Irish Lions clash against the Wallabies in 1989 and a ground-record crowd in 1993 for the first match between Australia and South Africa since the abolishment of Apartheid.

The last Asteron Life Super Rugby match played at Ballymore was a regular season fixture against the Blues in 2010.
The Reds’ trial match against the Rebels will feature a heavy international flavour, with the current Reds squad boasting 18 capped Wallabies, while the Rebels line-up for 2014 includes Test players from Australia, New Zealand, Tonga and Japan.

The clash with the Rebels follows on from a successful ‘Back to Ballymore’ Premier Grade finals series earlier this year, which included a crowd of nearly 9,000 in attendance for the final match between Easts Tigers and GPS.

The game against the Rebels kicks off at 7:40pm, with tickets starting as low as $15 for general admission.

The trial against the Chiefs in Toowoomba the week prior, on February 8, kicks off at 6:30pm and includes a curtain raiser at 4:30pm, featuring the Darling Downs representative team.

The Reds’ regular season starts February 22, with clashes on the road to the Brumbies and the Waratahs, before their first match at Suncorp Stadium against the Cheetahs on Friday 7 March.

Reds members will get the first chance to purchase tickets to the Ballymore trial match from midday (AEST) today, with the general public sale starting tomorrow at midday (AEST). Tickets are available free of charge for Junior Members when purchasing with an adult.

Tickets are available at ticketek.com.au.
