There are a range of opportunities for Women to play Rugby Union in Queensland. Club competitions are run in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Cairns. Each year Queensland Rugby Union sends a Queensland side to the ARU National Championships.
Queensland Women's Sevens Teams Announced
Ballymore Women’s Sevens Series
The Ballymore Women’s Sevens Series is a new initiative designed to assist Queensland Rugby identify the next generation of talent while encouraging more women to play Sevens Rugby ahead of the sport’s inclusion at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio The new competition will be staged over February and March and has been is an important addition to the representative pathway.
Standout players from the competition will be selected to a training squad from which, two Queensland Women’s Sevens teams will be selected to compete at the National Championships from Friday April 12-14.
Australian Women’s Sevens
Queensland is strongly represented in Australian Women’s Sevens with 8 women featuring in the current Australian squad including Iliseva Batibasaga, Amy Turner, Shannon Parry, Gemma & Nikki Etherigde, Australian Women’s stalwart Tricia Brown, young guns Charlotte Caslick & Emilee Cherry, as well as captain Rebecca Tavo.
The Australian Women’s Sevens team play on the International Sevens circuit and in 2013 will compete at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow.
The team will go into the World Cup as defending champions after they made history in Dubai in 2009 when they defeated New Zealand 15-10 in nail-biting fashion to claim the first-ever women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens title.
